Essential Responsibilities

  • Learn and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and job travelers (manufacturing routing documents that define the process sequence for each part).
  • Assist with setup and operation of CNC machining centers (HAAS, Mori Seiki, or equivalent) for operations including:
    • Edging and diameter generation
    • Beveling and chamfering
    • Profile machining and contouring
    • Other material removal operations on glass and ceramic substrates
  • Load, align, and secure optical and ceramic workpieces in fixtures, chucks, and holding devices.
  • Monitor machine operations during cutting cycles; identify abnormal conditions such as tool wear, chipping, breakage, or runout and escalate as needed.
  • Perform basic in-process dimensional inspection using shop-floor tools including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and optical comparators.
  • Read and follow basic machining drawings, blueprints, and job travelers (training provided).
  • Understand basic G-code structure and be able to read, verify, and make minor edits to CNC programs under supervision.
  • Maintain clean tools, machines, and work areas in accordance with safety and quality requirements.
  • Manage coolant systems, tooling, and consumables; support routine machine upkeep.
  • Accurately complete production logs, labels, and basic traceability documentation.
  • Escalate process issues, quality concerns, or equipment abnormalities to supervisors or lead technicians.
  • Support team goals for quality, throughput, and on-time delivery.

Qualifications

Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to handle delicate parts carefully.
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Basic shop math skills including decimals, fractions, ratios, measurements, and unit conversions.
Preferred:
  • Any experience operating CNC machining centers (HAAS, Mori Seiki, or similar).
  • Experience machining non-metallic materials such as glass, ceramics, or composite substrates.
  • Familiarity with micrometers, calipers, indicators, or other precision inspection tools.
  • Exposure to machining drawings, blueprints, or travelers.
  • Familiarity with computers, CNC controllers, and basic data entry.

What You Can Expect

  • Hands-on training in a specialized, high-demand field with real career progression opportunities.
  • A supportive team environment where experienced technicians and engineers mentor newer employees.
  • Work on precision optical and ceramic components used in demanding defense, aerospace, and industrial applications.
  • A clean, organized shop floor equipped with modern CNC machining centers.

Physical / Work Environment

  • Standing for extended periods; frequent hands-on machine setup and operation.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 25 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Use of hands and fingers to handle, feel, or manipulate delicate optical and ceramic components, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for inspection work.
  • Work is performed in a controlled manufacturing environment; noise level is generally moderate. Use of coolants, cutting fluids, and standard machine shop PPE is required.
Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
